Wool Pullover

This is a project that I have been working on for awhile now. This further proves how big of a dork I am when it comes to making my own stuff. I have been trying to find something similar to this for some time now and after coming up empty; I decided to design my own. This was my first attempt and I am relatively happy with it. The final design will have a slightly shorter collar with leather lining and leather reinforcement where the snaps are and on the bottom hem. This was built using a military surplus wool blanket, however, I have recently located a reliable source of heavy, quality wool that I will use on the next one.

I got the idea for this pullover when I was out west this fall. We were horseback for most of the day and layering was pretty important.  I don't particularily care for 3/4 length riding coats but don't like having the wind blow up my back while I'm riding either so I opted for the drawstring waistband. I also went with elastic cuffs.

I was going to put a hood on it, however, this was designed for layering and more often than not, your outer layer is going to have a hood. I have a set of Sleeping Indian wool camo (http://www.woolcamo.com/) that I use for late season deer hunting and predator hunting that fits over this perfectly.

I went with snaps on the collar instead of a zipper or buttons. Buttons are way too hard to fasten with cold or gloved hands and zippers are hard on wild rags.

I placed the bellows pocket way too high on this one and plan on downsizing it a little and moving it down an inch or so. I might put an external pocket on top of or just above the pocket too - I haven't decided yet.

Like I said, I am a dork and I think I have put WAY too much thought into this, but it's kind of fun. It's not necessarily something I plan on offering for sale, just a personal project.  Also, I would like to thank Kevin of Empire Canvas (http://www.empirecanvasworks.com/) for a great tutorial that he posted on another site. It helped me a lot in putting this together. When it comes to wool clothing, he is the man.

Ok, so I am a little behind schedule on this one but it's been a crazy July. What you see here is the finished ground seat. There are actually four layers of leather on top of a metal seat strainer that give the seat it's final shape. I have also installed the gullet cover too. Stay tuned for the horn.

Cowboy Bedroll

This is a bedroll tarp I recently completed. It is made from one piece of 7' x 17' 18oz Canvas Duck. Use this for throwing a foam mattress, sheets, and blankets in it for a really comfortable outdoor bed. However, one could simply throw their sleeping bag in it too. This bedroll comes complete with four snaps to keep it folded up and two snaps to keep the 4' flap folded over for those serious outdoor people who prefer to sleep outside without a tent!

Place your mattress, sheets, and blankets (or sleeping bag) like the photo to left being sure to leave at least 7' of material BELOW your bedding.

Next, bring the bottom material up and over your bedding.

Now, fold in the sides so that they meet in the middle and snap it up. Also, fold over the remaining four feet and snap. Now you're ready to roll everything up.

There's the finished bedroll ready for camping.

Here's a daypack I built awhile back and never got around to posting. It is made of 18oz canvas with a leather bottom and leather strap closures. It has a drawsting closure with a hidden zipper compartment under the flap.

Canvas Duffels

I often get asked if I work with canvas too. I made these large duffels out of heavy 15 oz canvas duck. They have heavy brass chap zippers with a pocket on each end and one on the front. I have more canvas on the way and look for more sizes, styles, and colors to come in the future. I also have plans for some bedrolls too.

Latigo Reins

These are some new reins I am trying out. They are doubled and stitched latigo that finish out a full 1/4" thick. They are oiled and hand finished which give them a true broken in feel.

My First Saddle (sort of)

Here is the saddle I finally finished for my wife Candace. It was originally meant to be a birthday present which then turned to an anniversary present, then a Christmas present back to a birthday present. It then turned back to an anniversary present and almost wound up being a Christmas present again but it's done now. As you can see, she wasn't even the first person to get to ride in it!! It's just a simple roughout on a CS Reiner with oversized dees. It has a padded seat and close contact skirts. I am already working on another one (which I actually started before this one). I am working on my turnaround time!!

Buckaroo Bridle

I have had a ton of requests for these and I finally made one (for myself!). It's made with heavy Herman Oak harness leather and I put 1" HO split reins on it. It's heavy but looks pretty cool!
